The information below is from the BTN transcript.

‘A baby’s born in Australia every minute and forty four seconds. Another biggie is immigration and Australia has a long history of it. Lots of people came in the 1800s when the Gold Rush almost tripled the population. And later on the government encouraged people to move here to help build Australia. After the Second World War people were offered cheap or free tickets to Australia on ships and millions took up the offer.’

Answer these questions in your writing book- The red words are to be used in your complete answers.

  1. What is Australia’s current population?
  2. What does immigration mean?
  3. Why have people come to Australia in the past?
  4. What does ‘as our population grows more infrastructure is needed’ mean?
  5. Why do most people live near the coast rather than in the centre of Australia?

Rewrite the figures in your maths grid book and add ‘000’ to each number. For example Victoria’s population is 5, 938,000  (close to 6 million)

CHALLENGE 1.  Calculate the total population of the territories.

2. Calculate the total population of the states.

3. Calculate the difference in the populations of NSW and Victoria.

4. Calculate the difference in the populations of Victoria and Tasmania.
