  1. Misleading Data and Graphs

    More than 90 percent of fake news articles contain a graph or some kind of mathematical data. That statistic sounds alarming. But the more alarming thing is that Charles Seife made it up. He’s a professor of journalism at New York University. “We think of numbers as something other than human,” says Seife. “But numbers that we use in the everyday world are very much human. They’re created, manipulated, and presented by humans.”

    Below are some of the ways companies and journalists might mislead people using graphs and data:

    After watching this short video, think about what Benjamin has discussed and answer the following questions in your English book.

    Morning 6R,

    Your task today is to read, rehearse and perform a short play. Mr Davies will assign you your play.

    In your literacy groups, you are to assign roles, read through the play and consider how you will ‘perform’ the play.

    Some things to think about are:

    • where you stand on stage / stage direction
    • actions to accompany the lines
    • voice / expression that matches your character
    • performance to an audience

    You will be performing your play to the class, so bring your a-grade acting skills!

    Extension: Think about filming this play. Storyboard and film it using different camera shots and angles. Which part of the story calls for a close up?
